Sometimes couple difficulties are focused in the area of sex. Sexual dysfunctions are disturbances in the normal sexual response cycle or pain associated with sexual intercourse. The sexual response cycle can be divided into 4 phases:

  • Desire (fantasies about or wishes to engage in sexual relations)
  • Excitement (pleasure associated with an erection for males and vaginal lubrication for females)
  • Orgasm
  • Resolution (relaxation)

Specific sexual dysfunctions represent difficulties in one or more of the first 3 phases of the sexual response cycle – for example:

  • Phase I: Low sexual desire
  • Phase II: Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
  • Phase III: Inability to attain an orgasm in women or premature ejaculation in men

There are also 2 main problems associated with sexual pain:

  • Dyspareunia – recurrent or persistent pain associated with intercourse
  • Vaginismus – recurrent or persistent involuntary spasm of the vagina that interferes with sexual intercourse

At the Montreal Clinic for Therapy Services, our psychologists and counseling professionals have benefited from specialized Ph.D. level training in the areas of couple distress and sexual dysfunctions. This specialization included a full year of supervised training at reputable training sites such as the Royal Victoria Hospital. This extensive training has provided our therapists with the expertise necessary to help you improve your relationship and/or become more comfortable with sex.

If you are experiencing couple difficulties and/or sexual dysfunctions, a professional at the Montreal Clinic for Therapy Services can help.
